Those who have oily skin can understand the dread of summer, when temperatures rise. As a girl with oily skin type living in Greece, I know the struggle is real. Summer is the time when oil production increases, and with it, the likelihood of clogged pores that can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. The accumulation of sebum, sweat, and dead skin cells can exacerbate these issues, but the right summer skincare regimen can help prevent them. That's why it's important to adjust your skincare routine to maintain healthy, hydrated and glowing skin in spite of the hot and humid weather. Thus, I have put together some skincare tips and recommendations that will help you control oil production and prevent breakouts.

1. Why is summer skincare important?

A good summer skincare is essential to protect your skin from harmful sun rays and counteract the effects of sweat and excessive oiliness, especially for those with oily complexion. Oily skin tends to produce more sebum as the temperature and humidity rise. Unfortunately, excessive sebum build-up leads to clogged pores and breakouts. Therefore, if you have oily skin, is essential to adjust your skincare routine during the summer season to counteract the effects of sweat and excessive oiliness. Investing in lightweight and non-comedogenic products designed specifically for oily skin can keep you feeling fresh and comfortable throughout the summer months.

2. Summer Skincare for oily skin

Here are 9 summer skincare tips to help you manage oily skin:

2.1 Double cleanse

The first step to a good skincare routine and maintaining healthy skin is cleansing. A gentle, pH-balanced, oil-free cleanser that can remove the excess oil and sweat from your skin without stripping it of its natural oils is key. Look for products that contain salicylic acid or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), as they can help to exfoliate the skin and control oil production.

You may also want to consider double cleansing in the evenings. The double cleansing method is the cleansing of the face with two different cleansers. To double cleanse you just need an oil-based cleanser and a water-based cleanser. Always start with the oil-based cleanser. Then cleanse your face again with the water-based cleanser. An oil-based cleanser is particularly effective in removing make-up, sunscreen, environmental pollutants and excess sebum. In turn, this helps the second, water-based, cleanser to better penetrate the skin pores and to effectively and deeply remove any skin impurities as well as sweat.

2.2 Mechanical exfoliation

Use a scrub once or twice a week to exfoliate your skin. For oily skin, mechanical exfoliation is most effective in removing built-up oil and to combat clogged pores.

2.3 Hydrating toner

A toner can help to further remove excess oil and debris from the skin. Witch hazel is a natural ingredient that can be used as an effective toner, as it helps to tighten pores and control oil production. Alcohol-based toners should be avoided, as they can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause further oil production. Instead, look for a toner that contains a hydrating ingredient like hyaluronic acid or ceramides to add moisture to the skin without adding excess oil.

2.4 Water based moisturizer.

If you have oily skin you may think you should skip moisturizing, fearing that it will make your skin even oilier. However, oily skin can still lack water and excessive summer heat can dehydrate it. Dehydration can cause your skin to produce more oil to hydrate itself. A lightweight, oil-free moisturizer won't clog pores or leave a greasy residue. Look for a water based moisturizer that has a matte finish and contains antioxidants or anti-inflammatory ingredients to soothe and protect the skin.

2.5 Oil-free sunscreen

Sun exposure can lead to premature aging and skin damage, thus wearing sunscreen is crucial. Oil-free, lightweight sunscreens that don't clog pores or leave a greasy residue work best for oily skin types. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that helps to protect your skin against both UVA and UVB rays of the sun with an SPF of at least 30.

2.6 Clay mask

Products that are mattifying are an ideal addition to your summer skincare routine. In particular, clay masks help remove oil and dirt from pores and also reduce the look of excess shine, making them great for oily skin. Use a clay mask once or twice a week.

Tip: By adding aloe gel or rose water will give cooling and soothing properties to your clay mask.

2.7 Blotting paper

Blotting paper can remove most of the excess oil from your face, leaving it fresh again and without destroying your makeup! Plus, it’s travel-friendly.

2.8 Avoid heavy makeup

Try to avoid heavy makeup as it can clog your pores and accelerate sebum production from your sebaceous glands. Plus, heavy coating of makeup is more possible to smudge or melt in the heat. To prevent this from happening, go for a lightweight makeup and choose products that are long-lasting and waterproof. For example, instead of going for a smoky eye look, choose lighter eye makeup such as a tinted moisturizer, waterproof eyeliner and mascara.

Another thing you can do to keep your makeup looking fresh and matte all day long is to use a mattifying primer. A mattifying primer will help to control oil production and prevent makeup from sliding off your face.

For a sweat proof summer makeup, if you need coverage then choose an oil-free and lightweight foundation. Look for a foundation specifically designed for oily skin and is lightweight, water-based, and breathable. It's best to avoid cream-based foundations as they can make your skin look greasy.

2.9 Invest in a skincare fridge

Heat can cause some skincare products to become less effective, or even expire quickly. Having a skincare fridge to store your products can help to prolong their lifespan and effectiveness. In addition to that, using skincare products straight from the fridge can provide a refreshing and cooling effect on the skin, which can help to reduce inflammation and redness caused by excess oil production.

Conclusion

In conclusion, summer is a great time to be out and about, but it can also be tough on your skin, especially if you have oily skin. However, managing oily skin during summer does not have to be a daunting task. Adopting the right habits and following a proper skincare routine can help keep your skin healthy and glowing.
